Leo Zempel [sic] was struck by lightning and instantly killed, last Saturday, shortly before noon.
Leo had been at work in the field, with the seeder, and when the shower came up he hitched onto the wagon and started for the barn. When within a few rods of the building, a bolt of lightning struck the outfit, killing Leo and knocking down both horses. Fred Suehs was at work building a fence nearby and also knocked down and stunned. When he regained consciousness he saw Leo on the ground and his clothing on fire. Mr. Suehs put out the fire and called for Mrs. Zempel ]sic], who hurried out. She placed her hand over his heart and detected a few slight heart-beats, and life was extinct.
The bolt had struck Leo on the head, one side of his head and face being badly burned, and there were marks on his body and limbs. His hat and clothing were torn and burned.
